What is Judy Reading Now?

Over the years I have come to be known as the “go-to person” when my staff, clients or friends want suggestions for good books to read in a variety of genres. I am a voracious reader, and now that I have an iPad, I can take my books everywhere I go.

I am only too happy to share my thoughts on books that I have found interesting, stimulating and thought provoking on a variety of business-related topics. I also welcome your thoughts and book recommendations; that way we can keep learning together.

1. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey
This is a key piece of personal leadership content that launched a multimillion-dollar career for a very good reason. You will find much of his work in successful coaches and leaders throughout the world. It is an easy read but one you will want to refresh every couple of years.
2. The Leadership Challenge by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner
I had the pleasure of training with Jim Kouzes early in my career, and during this training I had one of my most significant “Aha!” moments. Leadership is a very complex issue, which is why my professional library is filled with several variations of leadership theories. Kouzes and Posner have taken a complex subject and made it easily digestible. That’s why I have them in my foundation book club. This book is the perfect place to start your leadership journey.
3. Change Your Questions, Change Your Life: 7 Powerful Tools for Life and Work by Marilee G. Adams
Over the years I have encouraged many clients to read this book. It is a wonderful introduction to “listening effectively” and “solution focused thinking.” We all get into states where we can’t see the forest for the trees, and then we share our thinking with others. It’s easy to get out of this downward spiral if you just have a few tools to work with. I love this book.
4. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
For all of you business people who are likely thinking this book is too woo-woo: You couldn’t be more wrong. Napoleon Hill was so far ahead of his time when he wrote this that it blows my mind.  He addresses mindset, which is a key part of all of my work. If you can visualize it, you can have it. This short but effective book should be taught to kids in primary school. It is that powerful.
